Thirty Year Thursday: Peter Anderson
To celebrate our thirtieth year anniversary, we’re interviewing a friend of MAC each Thursday for thirty weeks as part of a series call “Thirty Year Thursday.” This week, we interviewed MAC board member and Sacred Heart parishioner Peter Anderson.
How did you first find out about MAC?
Years ago, as a member of Sacred Heart, I was part of the Front Door Ministry. We would send some of our clients over to Midtown Assistance Center if MAC could better serve them. At the time, we were interested in gaining financial support for MAC from parishioners since MAC often provided services that we were not qualified or equipped to administer.
What initially drew you to be involved with MAC?
A couple of things. I was asked to be a part of the board by other Sacred Heart parishioners, and I knew a number of people involved as volunteers and as service providers. It was an easy decision.
How has your experience at MAC influenced you?
Homelessness is one of my “hot button” concerns. It’s unfathomable that in a country like ours people are forced to live on the streets. It’s comforting to know that by supporting MAC we are keeping people in their homes.
Do you have a favorite story from your time at MAC?
It’s more of an overall observation. Anyone working at MAC—whether they are a staff member or volunteer—goes about their business and talks about their work with a smile. You can tell that their smiles are from the satisfaction they’ve found while actually helping people in need. That kind of satisfaction with one’s work is rare to see.
