January Volunteer of the Month: Anne

January Volunteer of the Month: Anne

Anne moved to Atlanta in January of 1968 right out of college to work as a computer programmer at the Georgia Power Co. Her first Sunday here she visited First Presbyterian Church. That day she met Mary Archer, the wife of the organist. Mary invited her to join the choir, which Anne has been singing in for over 50 years now. She also met her future husband that day (though they didn’t start dating until four years later). When her youngest of two daughters started school, Anne was asked to work part-time in the Music office at First Presbyterian. She served for twenty-two years, and also working the last twelve in Community Ministry office.

Not long after retirement, someone suggested Anne volunteer at Midtown Assistance Center one day a week. It was a perfect fit for her, and she runs into many of my old clients from the Community Ministry office at First Pres. Anne is an invaluable member of the Friday team, meeting with clients and providing assistance with compassion and competence. Her generous spirit is a great gift to staff, fellow volunteers and clients. She has been volunteering at MAC nearly every week for six years.

In addition to serving at MAC, Anne still sings in the choir, and volunteers at her church answering phones. She also spends one night a month at First Presbyterian’s Women’s Transition Center for working single women trying to get back on their feet financially. She tries to stay in shape by working out three days a week at the Dorothy Benson Center in Sandy Springs where I live.
